You need to start by thinking about what type of business you want to run.

The Internet can make retail a viable part-time gig, but it takes a while for ANY new business to really generate positive cash-flow.

I would recommend that you take a look at your hobbies and pass-times. Is there something there that looks like an opportunity? Also, look at your current expertise. Could you write an ebook to help other people understand your industry better? Is there a side-niche that you could work, without interfering with your 9-5 income? Is there a need in your community/neighborhood that you could fill?

The best plan is to know what business you want, then register the business name with your state and get a SEPARATE checking account and keep records of ANY financial transaction in which you involve your business. All proceeds of business activity needs to go through the business account, and all personal transactions through your personal account for clarity.
